Digit-Eyes (Indie Grits)

Location: Nickelodeon Theatre
Date: April 15 – 19, 2015
Theme: Future Perfect

digit-eyes is a simple, graphical image printed on a series of transparencies and mounted in a custom light box. The visible picture is a composite of four distinct color channels: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (or black). Each channel was printed on a separate transparency, mounted approximately ½” apart, and then backlit. The cyan, magenta, yellow, and black layers, in various combinations, produce “new” colors: reds, blues, greens, and grays. When viewed from the center at a distance, digit-eyes appears as a single image containing nine distinct colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, red, blue, green, white, and gray), but when viewed up close or from a sharp angle, only four overlapping colors are apparent (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). A standard for digital printing, the CMYK color space – as employed in this image – simulates almost every perceptible color. digit-eyes demonstrates one of the underlying principles of digital information and data: complexity arises from simplicity.
